Rampurhat lies in the northern part of Birbhum district, an area culturally associated with the Tarapith temple complex and with the literary heritage of Rabindranath Tagore's Santiniketan to the south. The college was established to extend access to undergraduate education to students from Rampurhat town and the surrounding rural blocks of Birbhum, many of whom would otherwise have had to travel to Suri, Bolpur or Bardhaman for higher studies.
The college conducts honours and general undergraduate programmes across the three traditional faculties. As an affiliated college, it follows the curriculum, examination pattern and degree structure prescribed by the University of Burdwan. The institution is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The campus is situated within Rampurhat town and provides classroom blocks, science laboratories, a library and facilities for sports and cultural activities. Students participate in National Service Scheme (NSS) units, departmental seminars and annual cultural programmes.
As one of the older institutions of higher learning in northern Birbhum, Rampurhat College plays an important role in providing affordable undergraduate education to first-generation learners from rural and semi-urban backgrounds, and acts as a feeder institution for postgraduate studies at universities in West Bengal.
