Overview

Ram Charan is an Indian film actor, dancer, and producer who works predominantly in Telugu cinema. He is one of the highest-paid actors in Indian film industry and has played a central role in the global expansion of Telugu cinema, most notably through his performance in S. S. Rajamouli's RRR (2022). The son of veteran actor and politician Chiranjeevi, he belongs to the prominent Konidela film family of Andhra Pradesh.

Background and family

Ram Charan was born into the Konidela family, one of the most influential film families in the Telugu industry. His father, Chiranjeevi, is widely regarded as one of the most popular Telugu actors of his generation and later served as a Union Minister of State for Tourism in the Government of India. His uncles Pawan Kalyan and Nagendra Babu, and his cousins Allu Arjun, Varun Tej, Sai Dharam Tej, and Niharika Konidela are also active in the film industry.

Charan married Upasana Kamineni, vice-chairperson of Apollo Charity and a member of the Apollo Hospitals founding family, in June 2012 in Hyderabad. The couple's daughter, Klin Kaara Konidela, was born in 2023.

Career

Debut and early films

Ram Charan made his acting debut with Chirutha (2007), directed by Puri Jagannadh, which earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut – South. He followed this with Magadheera (2009), directed by S. S. Rajamouli, a fantasy action film that became one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of its time and established him as a leading star.

Established lead

Subsequent films included Orange (2010), Racha (2012), Naayak (2013), and Yevadu (2014). He made his Hindi-language debut with Zanjeer (2013), a remake of the 1973 Amitabh Bachchan film. He returned to commercial success in Telugu with Govindudu Andarivadele (2014), Bruce Lee: The Fighter (2015), Dhruva (2016), and Rangasthalam (2018), the last directed by Sukumar and set in the political milieu of a 1980s village in coastal Andhra Pradesh.

RRR and after

In 2022, Ram Charan starred opposite N. T. Rama Rao Jr. in S. S. Rajamouli's RRR, a fictionalised period epic centred on revolutionaries Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem. The film became a worldwide box office success and received international recognition. Its song Naatu Naatu, composed by M. M. Keeravani and picturised on Charan and NTR Jr., won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2023, the first Indian film song to do so. He next appeared in Game Changer (2025), directed by S. Shankar.

Production and business interests

Ram Charan founded Konidela Production Company, under which he has produced Telugu films including Khaidi No. 150 (2017) and Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (2019), both starring his father Chiranjeevi. He has also been associated with the airline venture TruJet and various entrepreneurial activities, alongside endorsements for major Indian and international brands.
