Health sciences education in Rajasthan was historically affiliated to the general state universities, principally the University of Rajasthan in Jaipur and other regional universities. With the rapid expansion of medical, dental and nursing colleges in the state, a dedicated university was established to consolidate the regulation and academic governance of health sciences institutions under a single specialised body. RUHS was created by the Government of Rajasthan to serve this purpose, in line with the trend in several Indian states of forming specialised health universities.
As an affiliating university, RUHS oversees a wide network of constituent and affiliated colleges spread across Rajasthan. Its academic activities typically include:
The university campus is situated in Jaipur and houses administrative offices along with academic and clinical facilities. A teaching hospital associated with RUHS in Jaipur came to public prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it was designated as one of the principal dedicated COVID-19 treatment centres in Rajasthan, providing patient care, testing and training support.
RUHS plays a central role in standardising health sciences education in Rajasthan, a large state with a wide geographic spread of medical and allied institutions. By centralising affiliation, examination and degree-awarding functions, the university supports uniform academic quality across government and private colleges, and contributes to the production of medical, dental, nursing and paramedical professionals serving the state's public health system.
