Raisen district is bordered by Sehore and Bhopal districts to the west, Vidisha to the north, Sagar and Narsinghpur to the east, and Hoshangabad (Narmadapuram) to the south. The Narmada River flows along the southern boundary, while the Betwa River traverses the northern part of the district. The terrain is a mix of the Vindhyan uplands and fertile river valleys, with extensive forest cover.
The region has a long and layered history. The Bhimbetka rock shelters, located in the district, contain some of the earliest known traces of human life on the Indian subcontinent and are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The area also encompasses Sanchi, renowned for its Buddhist stupas commissioned during the reign of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE; the Great Stupa at Sanchi is likewise a World Heritage Site.
The hill fort of Raisen, prominent in medieval Malwa politics, was associated with Rajput chiefs and later passed through the hands of the Sultans of Malwa, the Mughals, and eventually the rulers of Bhopal. After Indian independence, the territory became part of the princely state of Bhopal and was integrated into Madhya Pradesh upon the states reorganisation of 1956.
The district is divided into several tehsils and community development blocks. Major towns include Raisen, Mandideep, Begamganj, Silwani, Bareli, Gairatganj, and Sanchi. Mandideep, situated near Bhopal, is one of the most important industrial centres in Madhya Pradesh.
The district economy is predominantly agricultural, with wheat, soybean, gram, and paddy as principal crops. Industrial activity is concentrated in the Mandideep industrial area, which hosts manufacturing units in engineering, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and consumer goods. Forest produce and stone quarrying also contribute to the local economy.
The district is served by national and state highways linking it to Bhopal, Sagar, and Vidisha. Railway stations on routes connecting Bhopal with Itarsi and Bina pass through parts of the district, with Sanchi and Mandideep being notable stops. The nearest major airport is Raja Bhoj Airport at Bhopal.
