Early career

De Kock made his domestic debut for the Highveld Lions during the 2012/13 season. He drew the attention of national selectors after starring in a match-winning partnership with Neil McKenzie in the Champions League T20 against the Mumbai Indians. In the same season, he finished fourth on the first-class rankings despite featuring in only six of the ten matches.

International career

De Kock made his international debut in the opening match of South Africa's home Twenty20 International series against New Zealand in the 2012/13 season. He kept wickets in place of AB de Villiers, who had asked to be rested for the series. He has since played regularly for South Africa in both One Day Internationals and T20Is.

In February 2014, de Kock made his Test debut for South Africa, initially playing solely as a batsman. While he opens the batting in ODI and T20I cricket, he primarily bats in the middle order in Test matches.

ODI milestones

By his 20th ODI, de Kock had already scored five centuries. He became the fourth player to score three successive one-day centuries and the second player to score four ODI centuries before turning 21. In his 74th ODI, against Sri Lanka on 10 February 2017, he became the fastest player to complete 12 ODI hundreds, bettering Hashim Amla, who had reached the landmark in 81 innings.

Captaincy

De Kock captained South Africa across all three international formats. In December 2020, during the series against Sri Lanka, he captained South Africa for the first time in Test cricket.

Domestic and franchise cricket

Before joining the Titans in 2015, de Kock played domestic cricket for Gauteng and the Highveld Lions. In the Indian Premier League, he has represented Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Daredevils, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians.

Honours and recognition

  • Named Cricketer of the Year at Cricket South Africa's 2017 Annual Awards.
  • Named South Africa's Men's Cricketer of the Year at Cricket South Africa's annual awards ceremony in July 2020.

Significance

De Kock's rapid accumulation of ODI centuries early in his career, combined with his reliability behind the stumps, established him as a key figure in South African cricket through the 2010s. His ability to open in white-ball cricket while adapting to a middle-order role in Tests has made him an unusually versatile wicket-keeper batsman.
