The institution provides technical education primarily to students from southern Tamil Nadu and neighbouring parts of Kerala.
As an Anna University–affiliated college, Ponjesly College of Engineering follows the curricula, examination pattern, and academic calendar prescribed by the university. Programmes typically lead to the award of Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) degrees in core engineering disciplines, along with selected postgraduate offerings. Admission to undergraduate engineering programmes in Tamil Nadu is generally regulated through the centralised counselling process conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education, Tamil Nadu.
The campus is located near Nagercoil, the administrative headquarters of Kanyakumari district. The town is connected by rail and road to Tirunelveli, Madurai, Thiruvananthapuram, and Chennai, and lies close to National Highway 44 (the Kanyakumari–Srinagar corridor).
Along with other engineering colleges in the district, Ponjesly College of Engineering contributes to the availability of professional technical education in the southernmost region of Tamil Nadu, an area that historically depended on institutions in Tirunelveli, Madurai, and Thiruvananthapuram for higher technical studies.
