The series centres on four friends — Naveen Bansal, Yogendra Kumar (Yogi), Mandal and Saurabh Mandal (Jeetu) — who give up stable corporate careers to build a startup. The narrative explores common themes faced by first-time founders in India, including ideation, co-founder conflicts, fundraising, equity dilution, hiring, and the personal cost of entrepreneurship. The tagline associated with the show, "Tu Beer Hai", became a popular catchphrase in Indian pop culture.
The first season was produced by The Viral Fever, a Mumbai-based digital content company founded by Arunabh Kumar. It was directed by Amit Golani and written by Biswapati Sarkar, both long-standing creative figures at TVF. The show was shot largely in Mumbai and Bengaluru, drawing on the lived experience of the country's startup ecosystem.
The first season consisted of five episodes and was released on TVFPlay and YouTube during 2015. It received strong word-of-mouth reception, particularly among young urban viewers and the technology and startup community. The season covered the formation of the founding team, the pitching process to angel investors, and the early operational challenges of running a bootstrapped venture.
After a long gap, a second season was announced and released in 2022, streaming on ZEE5 along with TVFPlay. The second season picked up the storyline at a more advanced stage of the startup's journey, focusing on scaling, investor pressure, board dynamics, and the strain on personal relationships. It featured the return of the original principal cast.
Pitchers is often cited as a landmark in the development of original Indian web content. Released at a time when streaming services in India were still nascent, it demonstrated that long-form, sponsor-supported original drama could attract a substantial digital audience. The show is also credited with bringing wider public attention to startup culture, founder dynamics, and venture capital in India, and with launching or boosting the screen careers of Naveen Kasturia and Jitendra Kumar.
