Pawan Kalyan is an Indian actor, film producer, and politician who works primarily in Telugu cinema. He is the founder and president of the Jana Sena Party, established in 2014, and serves as the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh following the 2024 state assembly elections. He is the younger brother of veteran actor and politician Chiranjeevi and a member of the Konidela family, which has had a prominent presence in Telugu film and public life.

Pawan Kalyan was born into the Konidela family in Bapatla, in coastal Andhra Pradesh. His father, Konidela Venkat Rao, served as a police constable. He is the youngest of three brothers; the eldest, Chiranjeevi, became one of Telugu cinema's leading stars in the 1980s, while the middle brother, Nagababu, also worked as an actor and producer. Pawan Kalyan adopted his screen name early in his career, partly to establish a distinct identity from his elder brother. He has cited an interest in martial arts, particularly karate, which has shaped his on-screen action style.
He made his acting debut with Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi (1996). His breakthrough came with Tholi Prema (1998), directed by A. Karunakaran, which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. The film established him as a youth icon in Telugu cinema.
Through the late 1990s and 2000s, he featured in commercially successful films including Suswagatham (1998), Thammudu (1999), Badri (2000), Khushi (2001), Johnny (2003, which he also directed), Balu (2005), Jalsa (2008), and Gabbar Singh (2012), the last of which was a remake of the Hindi film Dabangg and one of his biggest commercial hits.
His subsequent releases include Attarintiki Daredi (2013), directed by Trivikram Srinivas, which became a major box-office success, followed by Gopala Gopala (2015), Sardaar Gabbar Singh (2016), Katamarayudu (2017), Agnyaathavaasi (2018), Vakeel Saab (2021, a remake of the Hindi film Pink), Bheemla Nayak (2022), and Hari Hara Veera Mallu.
He founded the production banner Pawan Kalyan Creative Works.
Pawan Kalyan was associated with the Praja Rajyam Party founded by Chiranjeevi in 2008, where he led the youth wing, Yuva Rajyam. After Praja Rajyam merged with the Indian National Congress in 2011, he distanced himself from active party politics for a period.
On 14 March 2014, he launched the Jana Sena Party in Hyderabad. The party positioned itself around themes of social justice, regional development, and welfare of working-class communities in the Telugu states. In the 2014 general and assembly elections, the party did not contest but extended support to the Bharatiya Janata Party–Telugu Desam Party alliance.
The Jana Sena Party contested the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections in alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party and the Communist parties. The party won one assembly seat. Pawan Kalyan contested from two constituencies, Bhimavaram and Gajuwaka, and lost both.
Ahead of the 2024 elections, the Jana Sena Party joined the National Democratic Alliance, forming a tripartite alliance with the Telugu Desam Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party. The alliance won a decisive mandate in Andhra Pradesh. Pawan Kalyan won the Pithapuram assembly seat, and Jana Sena recorded a high strike rate in the seats it contested. He was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in the cabinet headed by N. Chandrababu Naidu.
Pawan Kalyan has been married three times. He is the father of children from his second and third marriages. He is known publicly for his interest in literature, philosophy, and martial arts, and has frequently spoken about influences such as Bhagat Singh, Mahatma Gandhi, and Che Guevara in his political discourse.
Pawan Kalyan occupies a distinctive position in the Telugu states as both a leading film star and an active political figure. His fan base, organised through fan associations across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, has historically translated into electoral mobilisation for the Jana Sena Party. His political career reflects a broader pattern of South Indian cinema personalities entering electoral politics, comparable to figures such as N. T. Rama Rao, M. G. Ramachandran, and J. Jayalalithaa. His role in the 2024 NDA alliance and subsequent appointment as Deputy Chief Minister marked the most significant political milestone of his career.
