Nihal Sarin was born in Thrissur, Kerala. His father, Sarin Abdulsalam, is a dermatologist, and his mother, Shijin Ammanam Veetil, is a civil servant. He learned the moves of chess at a young age and began competing in age-group tournaments soon after, gaining early recognition for an exceptional memory and tactical ability.
His training has been associated with coaches in India and abroad, including grandmaster-level mentorship that helped shape his opening repertoire and endgame technique. He has been part of the Microsense-supported group of young Indian players based in Chennai for periods of his career, alongside several other emerging Indian talents.
Nihal is regarded as a sharp, tactical player with strong calculation and a fast playing speed, which has translated into particular success in rapid and blitz formats. Commentators have frequently noted his composure under time pressure and his fluency in online play, where he is among the highest-rated Indian players on major chess servers.
Nihal Sarin is part of a generation of Indian chess prodigies that includes R. Praggnanandhaa, D. Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi and Raunak Sadhwani, whose collective rise in the late 2010s and early 2020s significantly raised India's profile in world chess.
