The institution traces its origins to the Delhi Institute of Technology, which was later reorganised as the Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT). For much of its history as NSIT, it functioned as a constituent institute of the University of Delhi, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in engineering. The campus is situated in Azad Hind Fauj Marg, Dwarka Sector-3, on a sizeable plot in the south-western part of the capital.
NSIT was upgraded to a full-fledged state university by an act of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, becoming the Netaji Subhas University of Technology. The transition gave the institution autonomy in designing its academic programmes, conducting its own admissions and examinations, and awarding its own degrees, replacing its earlier status as a college affiliated to the University of Delhi.
NSUT offers programmes at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. Core disciplines include:
The university also runs programmes in management, humanities, and basic sciences such as mathematics, physics and chemistry, supporting its engineering curriculum.
Admission to undergraduate engineering programmes is conducted through national-level entrance examinations administered by the central counselling system for centrally and state-funded technical institutions. Postgraduate admissions typically use scores from the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and other relevant national tests.
The main campus lies in Dwarka and houses academic blocks, laboratories, hostels, a central library, sports facilities and student activity centres. Its location in the South West district places it within Delhi's planned sub-city of Dwarka, well connected by the Delhi Metro and arterial roads.
As one of Delhi's principal state-funded technical universities, NSUT plays a notable role in engineering education in northern India. Alongside institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and the Delhi Technological University, it is regarded as a major destination for engineering aspirants in the National Capital Region. Its alumni network is active in the technology industry, research, public service and entrepreneurship.
