NIT Srinagar was originally established as the Regional Engineering College (REC), Srinagar, as part of a national programme to set up regional engineering institutions jointly funded by the central government and the respective state governments. RECs were intended to broaden access to high-quality engineering education across India and to draw students from multiple states under a partial home-state and partial all-India admissions framework.
In 2003, the Government of India upgraded the RECs to National Institutes of Technology, bringing them fully under central government funding and administration as deemed universities. With the enactment of the National Institutes of Technology Act in 2007, NIT Srinagar, along with the other NITs, was formally declared an Institute of National Importance with autonomous statutory status.
The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes primarily in engineering, technology, sciences, and management-related disciplines. Undergraduate admission to the Bachelor of Technology programmes is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) and the centralised Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling. Postgraduate admissions in engineering streams are typically based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
Departments at NIT Srinagar include civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and communication engineering, computer science and engineering, chemical engineering, metallurgical and materials engineering, information technology, along with departments of physics, chemistry, mathematics, humanities, social sciences, and management studies.
The main campus is located at Hazratbal in Srinagar, on the western shore of Dal Lake. The setting places the institute close to the University of Kashmir and the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, forming part of a concentrated cluster of higher education and research institutions in the city. The campus houses academic blocks, hostels, faculty residences, libraries, and laboratories.
As with other NITs, NIT Srinagar is administered under the framework of the NIT Council, chaired by the Union Minister of Education. Each institute has a Board of Governors, a Senate that oversees academic matters, and a Director who serves as the chief academic and executive officer.
NIT Srinagar is the principal centrally funded technical institute serving Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, and one of the major engineering schools in northern India. Through its all-India admissions intake, it draws students from across the country, contributing to the integration of the region within India's higher education ecosystem and producing engineers who work in industry, public services, and academia.
