The institute was originally established as the Regional Engineering College (REC), Silchar, as a joint enterprise of the Government of India and the Government of Assam. It was one of the regional engineering colleges set up across India to expand technical education on a federal model, with central and state governments sharing responsibility for funding and administration.
In 2002, along with several other RECs, the institution was upgraded to a National Institute of Technology and brought under the direct administrative control of the central government. With the enactment of the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007, NIT Silchar was formally declared an Institute of National Importance.
The campus is situated on the banks of a hill-fed terrain on the outskirts of Silchar town, in the Barak Valley region of southern Assam. Silchar is the second-largest city of Assam and serves as a regional hub for the surrounding districts of Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi. The campus houses academic departments, hostels, residential quarters for faculty and staff, a central library, laboratories, and sports facilities.
NIT Silchar offers Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes across core engineering disciplines, including Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and other allied branches. Postgraduate programmes include Master of Technology (M.Tech), Master of Science (M.Sc), and Master of Business Administration (MBA), along with doctoral (Ph.D) research across engineering, science, humanities, and management.
Admission to undergraduate B.Tech programmes is conducted through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main) via the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling process. Postgraduate admissions are largely based on the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and the Common Admission Test (CAT) for management programmes.
As with other NITs, the institute is governed by a Board of Governors, with a Chairperson appointed by the central government and a Director who serves as the chief executive and academic head. Academic decisions are taken through the Senate. The Council of NITs, chaired by the Union Minister of Education, oversees coordination and policy across the NIT system.
NIT Silchar is one of the principal centres of higher technical education in North-East India and the only NIT located in the Barak Valley region. It plays a notable role in providing engineering, research, and management training opportunities to students from Assam, the surrounding north-eastern states, and across India, contributing to regional development and the broader national pool of technical manpower.
