Mungeli district was carved out of the larger Bilaspur district as part of an administrative reorganisation in Chhattisgarh aimed at improving local governance and service delivery. Before becoming a separate district, Mungeli functioned as a tehsil and sub-divisional headquarters under Bilaspur.
The district lies in the plains region of Chhattisgarh and is drained by the Maniyari river, a tributary of the Shivnath. Agriculture, particularly paddy cultivation, dominates land use, supported by the Maniyari irrigation system. The district shares boundaries with Bilaspur, Kabirdham and Bemetara districts, among others.
The district is administered by a District Collector and is divided into tehsils and development blocks, including Mungeli, Lormi and Pathariya. It falls within the jurisdiction of the Bilaspur revenue division and the Bilaspur range of police administration.
The economy is predominantly agrarian, with rice as the principal crop. Pulses, oilseeds and vegetables are also cultivated. The district hosts weekly markets (haats) that serve as commercial nodes for surrounding villages. Mungeli town is also known for the historic Christian mission hospital established in the early twentieth century, which has long served the region.
The population includes communities speaking Chhattisgarhi alongside Hindi. Local festivals, folk traditions and tribal customs of central Chhattisgarh are observed across the district. The Achanakmar–Amarkantak biosphere region lies to the north, influencing the cultural and ecological character of the Lormi area.
