Bemetara district is an administrative district in the state of Chhattisgarh, India. The town of Bemetara serves as the district headquarters. The district lies in the plains region of central Chhattisgarh and is part of the Durg revenue division.

Background
Bemetara was carved out as a separate district from the erstwhile Durg district. Prior to its creation as an independent district, the area functioned as a tehsil and sub-division within Durg. The reorganisation was part of a wider effort by the Government of Chhattisgarh to bring administration closer to citizens by creating smaller districts after the formation of the state in November 2000.
Geography
The district is situated in the central plains of Chhattisgarh, an area characterised by relatively flat terrain and agricultural land use. It shares boundaries with several neighbouring districts of Chhattisgarh, including Durg, Kabirdham (Kawardha), Raipur and Mungeli, and is broadly part of the Shivnath river basin, with the Shivnath being a significant watercourse in the region.
Administration
The district is administered by a District Collector and Magistrate, with law and order under a Superintendent of Police. For administrative purposes, the district is organised into tehsils and development blocks, with revenue circles and gram panchayats forming the lower tiers of administration. The district falls within the jurisdiction of the Chhattisgarh High Court at Bilaspur.
Economy
The economy of Bemetara is predominantly agrarian. Paddy is the main kharif crop, in line with the wider cropping pattern of the Chhattisgarh plains, while pulses, oilseeds and wheat are also cultivated. Agro-processing and small-scale trade form the backbone of the local non-farm economy.
Significance
As one of the newer districts of Chhattisgarh, Bemetara represents the state's policy of decentralised administration. Its creation has enabled focused implementation of rural development, irrigation and welfare schemes in an area that was previously a peripheral part of the larger Durg district.
