The college is part of the network of institutions affiliated to Lalit Narayan Mithila University, which was established in 1972 with its headquarters in Darbhanga. As is common with several colleges in the region bearing the "Marwari" name, the institution traces its origins to philanthropic initiatives undertaken by members of the Marwari business community, who supported the founding of educational establishments across eastern India during the twentieth century.
The college offers undergraduate programmes leading to bachelor's degrees in the arts, commerce and science faculties, with provisions for honours subjects under the affiliating university's curriculum framework. Postgraduate programmes are conducted in select disciplines under the regulations of LNMU. Students appear for examinations conducted by the university, and the academic calendar follows the schedule notified by LNMU.
The college campus, situated within Darbhanga town, includes departmental blocks, a library, laboratories for science subjects and facilities for student activities. Like other constituent colleges of LNMU, it participates in university-level cultural, sporting and academic events.
Darbhanga has historically been a centre of learning in Mithila, associated with Sanskrit scholarship and, in the modern period, with institutions such as Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University and Lalit Narayan Mithila University. Marwari College contributes to higher education access in the district, serving students from Darbhanga and adjoining districts of north Bihar.
