Background

The university was set up to expand higher education in the Mithila region, an area with a long tradition of Sanskrit learning, Maithili literature, and Nyaya philosophy. Darbhanga, the seat of the former Darbhanga Raj, had been a centre of scholarship for centuries, and the establishment of a modern multi-faculty university in the city was intended to consolidate teaching, research, and affiliation work that had earlier been handled from Bhagalpur and Patna.

The institution was originally constituted as the University of Mithila and was later renamed in memory of Lalit Narayan Mishra, who represented Bihar in Parliament and held senior portfolios in the Government of India before his death in 1975.

Academic structure

LNMU offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes through faculties covering humanities, social sciences, science, commerce, education, law, and management, along with professional and vocational courses. The university administers examinations and confers degrees for a large number of constituent and affiliated colleges spread across districts such as Darbhanga, Madhubani, Samastipur, and Begusarai.

Postgraduate teaching is concentrated on the main campus in Darbhanga, while undergraduate instruction is largely delivered through affiliated colleges. Specialised departments include those for Maithili, Sanskrit, and other regional and classical disciplines, reflecting the cultural focus of the Mithila region.

Campus

The main campus is located in Darbhanga and houses the administrative offices, postgraduate departments, the central library, and examination facilities. The university also maintains directorates for distance education and research, in addition to hostels and student amenities.

Significance

As one of the principal universities of north Bihar, LNMU plays a central role in higher education access for students from largely rural and semi-urban backgrounds in the Mithila region. It contributes to the preservation and academic study of Maithili language and literature, as well as to teacher training and professional education for the region's workforce.
