MakeMyTrip was founded by Deep Kalra in 2000, initially focusing on the United States–India travel market by serving the non-resident Indian community with online air ticketing. With the liberalisation of the Indian aviation sector and the rise of low-cost carriers in the mid-2000s, the company expanded its services to Indian domestic customers and broadened its product portfolio.
MakeMyTrip Limited is incorporated in Mauritius and operates its core business through Indian subsidiaries headquartered in Gurugram. The group's principal consumer brands include MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, and redBus. Naspers (through its investment arms) became a significant shareholder following the Ibibo merger; the shareholding structure has evolved through subsequent transactions involving Trip.com Group and other investors.
MakeMyTrip is widely regarded as a pioneer of online travel commerce in India. It contributed to the shift from offline travel agencies to digital platforms, helped popularise online air ticket booking among Indian consumers, and supported the growth of low-cost carriers by providing a major distribution channel. The 2016 consolidation with Ibibo created one of the largest OTAs in the Indian subcontinent in terms of bookings and gross transaction value.
