Background
redBus was founded in 2006 by Phanindra Sama, Charan Padmaraju and Sudhakar Pasupunuri, three engineers who had encountered difficulties in obtaining inter-city bus tickets during a holiday weekend. The company was incubated through the TiE Bangalore network and built an inventory management system, BOSS (Bus Operator Software System), that bus operators could use to manage seat inventory while simultaneously listing seats for sale on the redBus consumer website.
This dual role of consumer-facing aggregator and back-end inventory provider became central to the company's business model, helping it onboard a large number of private bus operators that previously sold tickets only through travel agents.
History and timeline
- 2006: redBus founded in Bangalore by Phanindra Sama, Charan Padmaraju and Sudhakar Pasupunuri under the parent entity Pilani Soft Labs.
- Late 2000s: Expansion of operator network and launch of the BOSS inventory management platform for bus companies.
- 2013: Acquired by the ibibo Group, then a joint venture of Naspers and Tencent, in one of the larger Indian internet acquisitions of the period.
- 2017: Following the merger of ibibo Group with MakeMyTrip, redBus became part of the MakeMyTrip group while continuing to operate as a separate brand.
- Subsequent years: Expansion into international markets including Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Peru and Colombia, along with the introduction of allied services such as rail bookings and bus hire/rentals in select geographies.
Operations and services
redBus operates a website and mobile applications through which travellers can search routes, compare timings and fares, view seat layouts, choose boarding and dropping points, and pay online. The platform partners with private bus operators as well as state road transport corporations, including agencies such as APSRTC, TSRTC, KSRTC (Karnataka and Kerala) and others, depending on commercial arrangements.
Allied offerings have at various times included:
- Inter-city and intra-state bus ticket booking across India.
- International bus ticket booking in select South-East Asian and Latin American markets.
- BOSS and Bus Plus, software tools for bus operators to manage inventory and operations.
- rPool, an employee and intra-city carpooling service piloted in some Indian cities.
- Train ticket booking integrations and bus rental/charter services.
Significance
redBus is widely regarded as a pioneering Indian internet venture that organised a fragmented and largely offline private bus ticketing market. By aggregating thousands of operators on a single platform and providing them with digital inventory tools, it contributed to the formalisation and digitisation of the Indian inter-city bus industry. Its 2013 acquisition by the ibibo Group is frequently cited in studies of the Indian start-up ecosystem as an early high-value exit, and its founders have since been active as entrepreneurs and investors in the technology sector.
