Madhya Pradesh Bhoj Open University (MPBOU) is a state open university based in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, India. Established by the Government of Madhya Pradesh, it offers distance and open learning programmes across undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and certificate levels. The university is named after Raja Bhoj, the eleventh-century Paramara ruler of Malwa who is remembered for his patronage of learning, literature and the arts.

The university was set up under a state legislation passed by the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly to widen access to higher education through the open and distance learning (ODL) mode. It functions as the state-level counterpart to the national Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), catering primarily to learners residing in Madhya Pradesh who may not be able to pursue conventional full-time campus education due to employment, geographical or social constraints.
MPBOU offers a wide range of programmes through its schools of study, which typically cover the humanities, social sciences, commerce and management, sciences, education, computer applications and continuing education. Instruction is delivered through self-learning printed materials, periodic counselling sessions at affiliated study centres, and assignments, supplemented by term-end examinations.
The university operates a network of regional centres and study centres across Madhya Pradesh, hosted by colleges and recognised institutions, which serve as the primary point of contact for students for admissions, counselling and examinations.
As a state open university established by an Act of the state legislature, MPBOU's programmes delivered through the open and distance learning mode operate under the regulatory framework prescribed for ODL institutions in India, which has been administered over time by the University Grants Commission and, earlier, by the Distance Education Council.
MPBOU plays a notable role in expanding access to higher education in Madhya Pradesh, particularly for working professionals, women, rural learners and those in smaller towns where conventional university campuses are not easily accessible. By offering flexible entry requirements and a credit-based system in several programmes, it contributes to the state's broader objectives of improving the gross enrolment ratio in higher education.
