Lara Dutta is an Indian actress, model and former beauty queen who was crowned Miss Universe 2000, becoming the second Indian woman to win the title after Sushmita Sen in 1994. She has worked primarily in Hindi cinema and has also appeared in Tamil and Telugu films. Beyond entertainment, she is recognised for her work as a UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador and as an entrepreneur in the wellness and apparel sectors.

Lara Dutta was born on 16 April 1978 in Ghaziabad to Wing Commander L. K. Dutta, an officer of the Indian Air Force, and Jennifer Dutta, an Anglo-Indian. She is the youngest of three sisters, Sabrina and Cheryl. The family later relocated to Bengaluru, where she completed her schooling at Frank Anthony Public School. She subsequently moved to Mumbai for higher studies and graduated in Economics from the University of Mumbai.
Dutta entered the modelling circuit in the mid-1990s. In 1997, she won the Miss Intercontinental title held in Aalborg, Denmark. In 2000, she was crowned Femina Miss India Universe, with Priyanka Chopra winning Miss India World and Dia Mirza winning Miss India Asia Pacific the same year.
On 13 May 2000, she won the Miss Universe pageant held in Nicosia, Cyprus, scoring 8.91 in the interview round, which was at the time the highest score recorded in any sub-category of the Miss Universe competition. She was the fifth woman from India to be placed in the top five of Miss Universe and the second to win the title.
Dutta made her acting debut in the 2003 Tamil film Arasatchi, followed by her Hindi film debut in Andaaz (2003), opposite Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra. Her performance in Andaaz won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
She went on to appear in films such as Masti (2004), No Entry (2005), Bhagam Bhag (2006), Partner (2007), Housefull (2010) and Don 2 (2011), the last directed by Farhan Akhtar. She also featured in Blue (2009), one of the costliest Indian productions of its time.
In 2008, she co-founded the production company Bheegi Basanti Entertainment, under which she produced Chalo Dilli (2011), in which she also starred opposite Vinay Pathak. She returned to acting after a hiatus with the web series Hundred (2020) on Disney+ Hotstar and played former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Bell Bottom (2021).
In 2001, Dutta was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), focusing on issues related to HIV/AIDS awareness and adolescent health. She co-promotes a wellness brand and has been associated with several apparel and lifestyle ventures.
Dutta married professional tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi on 16 February 2011 in Bengaluru, followed by ceremonies in Goa. The couple have a daughter, Saira, born in January 2012.
Dutta's Miss Universe win in 2000 was part of a landmark year for Indian women in international pageantry, with Priyanka Chopra winning Miss World the same year. The dual victory drew significant global attention to India's pageant ecosystem and contributed to the visibility of Indian women in international fashion, advertising and cinema during the 2000s.
