Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College and General Hospital, widely known as L. T. M. Medical College or simply Sion Hospital, is one of the prominent public medical institutions in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is administered by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and serves a dual function as a teaching college for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students and as a large public hospital providing healthcare to residents of Mumbai and the surrounding region. The institution is named after Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the freedom fighter and social reformer popularly known as Lokmanya Tilak.
Sion Hospital has its origins in the mid-twentieth century, when the Bombay Municipal Corporation established a general hospital in the Sion locality of central Mumbai to extend public healthcare access to the city's growing population. Over subsequent decades, a formal medical college was attached to the hospital, transforming it into a full teaching institution. The college has since trained generations of doctors who have gone on to serve in public and private healthcare across India and abroad.
The institution is situated in Sion, a centrally located neighbourhood in Mumbai that connects the island city to its northern suburbs. Its location makes it accessible to patients from a wide catchment area, including densely populated localities such as Dharavi, Kurla, and Chembur.
L. T. M. Medical College offers the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree at the undergraduate level. Postgraduate programmes leading to MD, MS, and Diploma qualifications are offered across a range of clinical and non-clinical specialities. The college is affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik, which is the statutory university governing medical education across Maharashtra.
Admissions to the MBBS programme are conducted through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), administered at the national level. Postgraduate admissions follow the NEET-PG process. As a municipal institution, a portion of seats is reserved under various categories as per Maharashtra state government and BMC norms.
The college maintains departments spanning pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical disciplines. Pre-clinical departments include Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry. Para-clinical departments cover Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, and Forensic Medicine. Clinical departments encompass General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Radiology, Anaesthesia, and others.
The attached General Hospital, commonly referred to as Sion Hospital, functions as the primary clinical training ground for medical students and resident doctors. It operates as a tertiary care public hospital, receiving referrals from smaller municipal health posts and dispensaries across Mumbai. The hospital runs outpatient departments (OPDs), inpatient wards, an emergency and casualty unit, operation theatres, an intensive care unit, and diagnostic services including radiology and pathology laboratories.
Given its public character, Sion Hospital provides subsidised or free treatment to economically weaker sections of the population. The hospital's casualty department handles a significant volume of trauma and emergency cases, reflecting Mumbai's urban density and the hospital's central location.
The campus houses the medical college building, hospital wards, lecture halls, dissection halls, laboratories, a library, and residential accommodation for students and resident doctors. The library maintains collections of medical textbooks, journals, and digital resources to support academic and research activities. Hostel facilities are available for outstation students, subject to availability.
Students at L. T. M. Medical College participate in academic societies, cultural events, and sports activities. The institution has an active student body that organises annual cultural festivals, medical conferences, and community health outreach programmes. Resident doctors and interns gain hands-on clinical exposure through postings across the various departments of Sion Hospital.
