Kumkum Bhagya is an Indian Hindi-language television soap opera that premiered on Zee TV on 15 April 2014. Produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor under the banner of Balaji Telefilms, the show is loosely inspired by Jane Austen's 1811 novel Sense and Sensibility. The title translates approximately to "destiny of the vermilion," referring to the traditional symbol of marriage worn by Hindu married women.
The serial has been one of the longest-running and most-watched Hindi television shows in India, frequently topping the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) Indian television ratings during its peak years. It is dubbed and broadcast in several languages including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Bengali, and is also aired internationally.

The show was developed by Balaji Telefilms as a contemporary Indian adaptation of the Dashwood sisters' story from Sense and Sensibility, reset within a Punjabi family in Mumbai. While the early storyline drew from Austen's framework, the narrative quickly evolved into an original long-running serial centred on themes of marriage, family bonds, separation, and reunion.
The narrative initially revolves around two sisters, Pragya and Bulbul Arora, daughters of Sarla Arora, who runs a marriage hall. Their lives become entwined with the Mehra family, particularly the music-industry tycoon Abhi (Abhishek Prem Mehra). The marriage of Pragya and Abhi, and the recurring cycles of misunderstanding, separation, and reconciliation, form the central arc of the show.
