The institution traces its origins to the Karpagam group of educational establishments founded in Coimbatore. It was developed from an earlier college affiliated to Bharathiar University, and later attained the status of a deemed-to-be university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission. The campus is situated on the outskirts of Coimbatore, near the foothills of the Western Ghats.
