Bharathiar University is a state public university located in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. Established by the Government of Tamil Nadu, the university is named after the Tamil poet and freedom fighter Subramania Bharati. It functions as an affiliating, teaching and research institution, serving colleges across the western region of Tamil Nadu.

Background
The university was constituted under the Bharathiar University Act, 1981, passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, and began functioning in February 1982. It was carved out from the jurisdiction of the University of Madras to serve the educational needs of the western districts of Tamil Nadu, including Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, Erode and adjacent areas. The main campus is situated at Maruthamalai foothills on the western outskirts of Coimbatore city.
Academics and structure
The university operates through several schools and departments covering disciplines in the sciences, humanities, social sciences, management, commerce, languages, education and life sciences. Teaching is organised under faculties offering undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. In addition to its on-campus departments, Bharathiar University affiliates a large number of arts and science colleges and has a School of Distance Education that conducts programmes for off-campus learners.
