Background

Before the establishment of KVAFSU, veterinary and animal sciences education in Karnataka was offered through colleges affiliated with the agricultural universities of the state, particularly the University of Agricultural Sciences at Bangalore and Dharwad. With the growing importance of the livestock, dairy and fisheries sectors in the rural economy, the Government of Karnataka constituted a separate university to bring all related colleges and research stations under a single umbrella.

Academic structure

The university operates through a network of constituent veterinary colleges, a college of dairy science, and a college of fisheries, along with research and extension stations spread across Karnataka. Its academic mandate covers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in fields such as:

  • Veterinary medicine and surgery
  • Animal husbandry and livestock production
  • Dairy technology and dairy science
  • Fisheries science and aquaculture
  • Veterinary public health, microbiology and pathology

Research and extension

KVAFSU undertakes research on livestock breeds of Karnataka, animal nutrition, disease diagnosis and control, dairy product development, and inland and marine fisheries. Its extension activities include training programmes for farmers, fisherfolk and field veterinarians, livestock health camps, and dissemination of improved animal husbandry practices through Krishi Vigyan Kendras and outreach centres.

Significance

As the only university in Karnataka exclusively devoted to veterinary, animal and fisheries sciences, KVAFSU plays a central role in:

  • Training veterinary professionals who staff the state animal husbandry department and private practice.
  • Supporting the dairy cooperative network of Karnataka by producing dairy technologists and conducting applied research.
  • Developing the fisheries sector along the Karavali coast and in inland reservoirs.
  • Conserving and improving indigenous livestock breeds of the Deccan region.

Location

The university's headquarters at Bidar lies in the Kalyana-Karnataka region, while its constituent colleges are distributed across other parts of the state, including coastal Karnataka for fisheries education and southern Karnataka for veterinary and dairy programmes. This geographical spread allows the university to address the agro-climatic diversity of Karnataka.
