Background
Agricultural higher education in Karnataka was initially organised under the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, which was established in the mid-1960s on the land-grant model recommended for Indian agricultural universities. To strengthen regional focus and address the specific cropping systems, soils and farming conditions of northern Karnataka, the campus and operations at Dharwad were subsequently reorganised into a separate university dedicated to that region.
The Dharwad campus has long been a centre of agricultural learning, with antecedents in agricultural education and research institutions in the Bombay–Karnatak area that pre-date the formation of the present university. UAS Dharwad continues this tradition with constituent colleges, research stations and extension centres spread across northern Karnataka.
Academics and research
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in fields such as agriculture, horticulture, agricultural engineering, forestry, agribusiness management, community science (home science) and basic sciences applied to agriculture. Academic activities are organised through faculties and constituent colleges, supported by departments covering agronomy, soil science, plant pathology, entomology, genetics and plant breeding, agricultural economics, extension education and related disciplines.
Research at UAS Dharwad addresses crops important to the region, including cotton, sorghum (jowar), pulses, oilseeds, sugarcane, chillies and horticultural crops. The university operates a network of zonal agricultural research stations and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) that conduct location-specific research and farmer outreach.
Extension and outreach
As a land-grant style institution, UAS Dharwad places significant emphasis on agricultural extension. Activities include farmer training programmes, technology demonstrations, the annual Krishi Mela (agricultural fair) held on the main campus, publication of advisory material in Kannada, and dissemination of improved varieties and management practices through the KVK network.
Jurisdiction
The operational jurisdiction of UAS Dharwad covers several districts of northern Karnataka. The region's diverse agro-climatic conditions allow the university to work on rainfed as well as irrigated farming systems, dryland agriculture, and crops adapted to black cotton soils and red lateritic soils common in the area.
Significance
UAS Dharwad is regarded as an important institution for agricultural human resource development and crop improvement in northern Karnataka. Its varietal releases, soil and water management research, and extension programmes have contributed to the modernisation of farming practices in the region. Graduates of the university are employed in state and central agricultural departments, agricultural research institutions, agribusiness firms, banks and as independent agripreneurs.
