Following the formation of the state of Telangana in 2014, the new state required its own university to govern health sciences education, since the previously existing NTR University of Health Sciences (Vijayawada) continued to serve Andhra Pradesh. KNRUHS was established to take over the affiliation and academic regulation of medical and allied colleges located in Telangana.
The university is headquartered in Hanumakonda, in the Warangal urban region, which is one of the principal educational centres of northern Telangana.
KNRUHS functions primarily as an affiliating university. Its responsibilities include:

As the apex health sciences university of Telangana, KNRUHS plays a central role in shaping the medical workforce of the state. Through its affiliations with government and private medical colleges—including major institutions in Hyderabad, Warangal, Karimnagar, and other district centres—the university links classroom education with public hospital training and contributes to the delivery of healthcare across the region.
The naming of the university after Kaloji Narayana Rao reflects an effort to associate higher education in the new state with figures who were prominent in Telangana's literary and political identity.
