Jheel Mehta began acting as a child artist on Indian television. She came into prominence through Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, a sitcom produced by Neela Tele Films and based on the column Duniya Ne Undha Chasma by Gujarati humorist Taarak Mehta. The series, set in the fictional Gokuldham Co-operative Housing Society in Mumbai, premiered on 28 July 2008.
Jheel Mehta played Palak Sippy, the daughter of the characters Roshan Singh Sodhi and Roshan Kaur Sodhi (played by Gurucharan Singh and Jennifer Mistry Bansiwal). The role was that of a young schoolgirl in the Gokuldham society. She was part of the show during its formative years and contributed to one of Indian television's most recognised ensemble comedies.
Jheel Mehta left the show after a few years to focus on her studies. The role of Palak Sippy has subsequently been played by other actresses, including Tanvi Thakkar and Kratika Dheer, as the character was retained and continued to age within the storyline.
As one of the early child performers on Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, Jheel Mehta is associated with the foundational cast of a show that has become one of the longest-running sitcoms in Indian television history. The series is noted for its family-oriented humour and its depiction of a multicultural Indian neighbourhood.
