Indian Idol follows the standard Idol format. Open auditions are held in major Indian cities, after which selected contestants progress through theatre and piano rounds judged by a panel of music industry professionals. Finalists then perform on weekly live "gala" episodes, with eliminations decided by a combination of judges' opinions and viewer votes cast through SMS and, in later seasons, digital platforms. The winner typically receives a cash prize, a recording contract and an opportunity to record a song for a Hindi film soundtrack.
The Idols format, created by Simon Fuller, was first launched in the United Kingdom in 2001 as Pop Idol. Following the international success of similar adaptations such as American Idol, the format was licensed to India and adapted in Hindi for Sony Entertainment Television. The show was produced in association with Fremantle, the international rights holder of the format.
The first season of Indian Idol premiered in 2004 and was hosted by Mini Mathur and Hussain Kuwajerwala. The judging panel comprised composer Anu Malik, singer Sonu Nigam and music director Farah Khan. Abhijeet Sawant from Mumbai won the inaugural season and went on to release the album Aadat. The show was widely watched and helped popularise SMS voting on Indian television.
Subsequent early seasons saw winners including Sandeep Acharya (Season 2, 2005–06), Prashant Tamang (Season 3, 2007), whose victory drew strong support from the Indian Gorkha community in Darjeeling and the North-East, and Sourabhee Debbarma (Season 4, 2008–09), the first woman to win the title and the first winner from Tripura.
The show has continued for multiple seasons with rotating judges drawn from the Hindi film music industry, including Sunidhi Chauhan, Salim Merchant, Vishal Dadlani, Asha Bhosle, Anu Malik, Neha Kakkar, Vishal Dadlani and Himesh Reshammiya. Hosts in later seasons have included Aditya Narayan, Karan Wahi and Jay Bhanushali. Winners across seasons have included Sreeram Chandra, Vipul Mehta, L. V. Revanth, Salman Ali, Sunny Hindustani and Pawandeep Rajan among others.
Indian Idol is regarded as a landmark in the development of reality television in India. It contributed to the growth of audience participation through SMS voting, helped establish a template for talent-based reality programming and provided a national platform for singers from smaller towns and non-metropolitan regions. Several contestants and finalists, in addition to winners, have gone on to careers in Hindi film playback singing, regional cinema, live performance circuits and independent music. The show has also been the subject of media discussion regarding judging practices, contestant back-stories and the entertainment-versus-talent balance typical of reality competitions worldwide.
Across its run, Indian Idol has consistently drawn high television ratings on Sony Entertainment Television and has been one of the channel's flagship non-fiction properties. The show is noted for emotionally driven storytelling around contestants' backgrounds and for guest appearances by leading figures from the Hindi film and music industries.
