Background
Sonu Nigam was born into a musical family in Faridabad, Haryana. His father, Agam Kumar Nigam, was a singer, and Sonu reportedly began performing on stage with him as a child, often singing the songs of Mohammed Rafi at live events. The family later moved to Mumbai so that he could pursue a career in playback singing. He trained in Hindustani classical music under Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan.
Career
Early years
Nigam initially recorded a series of tribute albums of Mohammed Rafi's songs, which helped establish his vocal identity. His film playback career began in the early 1990s with small assignments before he gained wider recognition through television.
Television
He hosted the popular musical talent show Sa Re Ga Ma on Zee TV from 1995, which brought him into homes across India and was credited with introducing several future playback singers to the industry. He has subsequently appeared as a judge or mentor on numerous music-based reality programmes on Indian television.
Playback breakthrough
His playback career broke through with songs in films such as Border (1997), Pardes (1997), and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998). The album Deewana (1999), composed by Sajid–Wajid, was a major non-film success and is among the highest-selling Indi-pop albums of its era.
2000s peak
Through the 2000s he became one of the most-recorded male playback voices in Hindi cinema, with notable songs in films including Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Saathiya (2002), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Main Hoon Na (2004), Bunty Aur Babli (2005), and Jab We Met (2007). The title song of Kal Ho Naa Ho, composed by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer.
Acting
He has acted in a small number of films, including Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani (2002) and Love in Nepal (2004), although acting has remained secondary to his music career.
Live performance and international work
Nigam tours extensively in India and overseas, performing in the United States, the United Kingdom, the Gulf, Southeast Asia, and elsewhere. He has collaborated on international projects, including a recording with British composer A. R. Rahman's contemporaries, and has sung the English-language song "You Are My Soniya" and dubbed/featured tracks for Hollywood films released in India.
Other languages
Beyond Hindi, Nigam has recorded prolifically in Kannada, where he is a regular voice for leading actors, and in Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali cinema. He has also released devotional albums of bhajans and qawwalis, and ghazal-influenced records.
Awards and recognition
He has received the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer and multiple Filmfare Awards South, IIFA Awards, Zee Cine Awards, Screen Awards, and state film awards in Karnataka and other regions. He was awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honour, by the Government of India in 2022 for his contribution to the arts.
Public commentary
Nigam has periodically been in the public eye for statements on issues such as the use of loudspeakers for religious announcements, conditions in the music industry, and the treatment of independent musicians. Several of these remarks have prompted public debate in Indian media.
Personal life
He is married to Madhurima Nigam, a designer, and the couple has a son, Nevaan Nigam. The family is based in Mumbai. His brother-in-law connections and his father, Agam Kumar Nigam, also work in the music industry.
Significance
Sonu Nigam is regarded as a key figure in the transition of Hindi film playback singing from the post-Kishore Kumar era into the contemporary multi-singer era of the 2000s. His ability to perform across classical, romantic, devotional, qawwali, ghazal, and pop idioms, and his strong association with the legacy of Mohammed Rafi, have made him a reference point for younger playback singers in India.
