The ICFAI group was established in 1984 in Hyderabad as a not-for-profit society for promoting professional and academic education, with an early focus on financial analysis and management. From the mid-2000s onwards, the group set up a series of state private universities across India under enabling legislation passed by individual state legislatures. These institutions operate under common academic standards while functioning as independent universities chartered by their respective states.
The ICFAI University, Mizoram was established under a state Act of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly, which empowered it to award degrees recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956. As a state private university, its jurisdiction is confined to the territorial limits of Mizoram, and it is not authorised to operate off-campus centres outside the state.
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across faculties typically including management, commerce, education, information technology, and humanities. Programme delivery follows a semester-based structure with continuous internal evaluation alongside end-semester examinations. The institution also participates in the broader ICFAI network's flagship management and finance programmes, providing students in the North-East access to curricula otherwise concentrated in metropolitan centres.
Mizoram has historically had a limited number of higher education institutions, with Mizoram University serving as the principal central university in the state. The presence of a private university such as ICFAI University, Mizoram contributes to expanding the range of professional and management-oriented programmes available locally, reducing the need for students to migrate outside the North-East region for such studies.
