Overview
Mizoram University is a central university located in Aizawl, the capital of the north-eastern Indian state of Mizoram. It is one of the central universities established by an Act of the Parliament of India and serves as the principal institution for higher education and research in the state. The university functions under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and is funded by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Background
Before the creation of Mizoram University, higher education in Mizoram was administered through colleges affiliated to the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong. As the demand for a dedicated central university in the state grew, the Parliament of India enacted the Mizoram University Act to establish a separate university for Mizoram, bringing the state in line with several other north-eastern states that had their own central universities.
Establishment
Mizoram University was established under the Mizoram University Act, 2000. Following its creation, colleges in Mizoram that had been affiliated to NEHU were transferred to the new university, which became the central affiliating and teaching body for higher education in the state.
Campus
The main campus of Mizoram University is situated at Tanhril, on the outskirts of Aizawl. The campus accommodates academic departments, administrative offices, residential facilities and central services. In addition to teaching at the main campus, the university affiliates a network of colleges spread across the districts of Mizoram.
Academics
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes through schools and departments covering disciplines such as humanities, social sciences, sciences, education, economics, management, engineering and technology, earth sciences and life sciences. Departments dedicated to Mizo language and literature, and to the study of the cultures and languages of the north-east, contribute to documentation and research on regional heritage.
Governance
As with other central universities, Mizoram University is headed by a Chancellor, with the Vice-Chancellor as the principal executive and academic officer. The university is administered through statutory bodies including the Court, the Executive Council, the Academic Council and the Finance Committee, in accordance with the provisions of its Act and Statutes. The President of India serves as the Visitor of the university.
Significance
Mizoram University plays a central role in higher education and research in Mizoram. It supports the academic ecosystem of the state by affiliating colleges, conducting examinations, awarding degrees and undertaking research relevant to the north-eastern region, including studies on tribal societies, indigenous languages, biodiversity and the ecology of the Indo-Burma region.
