Handwara lies in the northern Kashmir Valley, in a relatively flat agricultural belt flanked by forested ridges of the Pir Panjal and adjoining ranges. The town is connected by road to Kupwara, the district headquarters, and to Srinagar, the largest city of the valley, by way of Sopore and Baramulla. The surrounding countryside is drained by tributaries that ultimately feed the Jhelum river system.
The local climate is typical of the Kashmir Valley, with cold, snow-prone winters and mild summers, supporting an agrarian economy based on paddy, maize, apple orchards, walnuts and other temperate horticulture.
The town is administered as a notified area committee and falls within the Handwara tehsil of Kupwara district. Handwara is also an assembly constituency that elects a member to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, and forms part of the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency for elections to the Indian Parliament.
Handwara functions as a market town for the surrounding rural belt. Horticulture, particularly apple cultivation, along with walnut production, paddy farming and small-scale trade in timber and handicrafts, forms the backbone of the local economy. The town hosts banks, schools, a sub-district hospital and other public institutions that serve adjoining villages.
The population of Handwara is predominantly Kashmiri-speaking and largely Muslim, with a presence of other communities. The town shares the broader cultural traditions of the Kashmir Valley, including its cuisine, crafts and religious festivals.
Handwara has a network of government and private schools, a degree college affiliated to the University of Kashmir, and various technical and vocational institutes serving students from the surrounding tehsils of Kupwara district.
Road transport is the principal means of access. Handwara is linked to Kupwara, Sopore, Baramulla and Srinagar by state highways and district roads. The nearest railhead is at Sopore/Baramulla on the Banihal–Baramulla section of the Kashmir Valley railway, while the nearest airport is the Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport at Srinagar.
