Sopore is a town and municipal council in the Baramulla district of the Kashmir Valley, in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Located on the banks of the Jhelum river, it is one of the larger urban centres of north Kashmir and is widely known as a major hub of apple cultivation and trade in India.

Geography
Sopore lies in the northern part of the Kashmir Valley, set within a broad alluvial plain that supports extensive horticulture. The Jhelum river flows through the town, and the surrounding countryside is characterised by orchards, paddy fields and willow groves. The town is connected by road to Baramulla to the south-west and to Bandipora and Srinagar through the regional road network.
Economy
Sopore is often referred to as the "Apple Town" of Kashmir on account of the scale of apple production and marketing in its vicinity. The Sopore fruit mandi is among the largest fruit markets in the region and serves as a key collection and dispatch point for apples sent to wholesale markets across India. Allied activities include packaging, transport, cold storage and trade in walnuts, pears and other temperate fruits. Rice cultivation, willow wickerwork and small-scale trade also form part of the local economy.
Administration
Civic administration is carried out by the Sopore Municipal Council. The town serves as the headquarters of the Sopore tehsil within Baramulla district and contains a sub-divisional administrative establishment, courts, a police station and government offices serving the surrounding rural areas.
Education
Sopore hosts a number of government and private schools, higher secondary institutions and a degree college affiliated with the University of Kashmir. The town has historically been associated with a strong tradition of literary and religious scholarship in Kashmiri and Urdu.
Culture
The cultural fabric of Sopore reflects broader Kashmiri traditions, including Kashmiri cuisine, handicrafts and Sufi religious practice. Mosques, shrines and bazaars form important social spaces, and the town has produced poets, scholars and writers in Kashmiri and Urdu literature.
Transport
Sopore is connected by road to Srinagar, Baramulla and Bandipora. The Baramulla–Banihal section of the Kashmir railway passes through the wider region, with the nearest major railway connection at Baramulla. The closest airport is Srinagar International Airport.
