Guna lies in north-central Madhya Pradesh, roughly between the Chambal and Betwa river basins. The terrain is part of the Malwa plateau, with moderate elevation and a semi-arid to subtropical climate marked by hot summers, a monsoon season from June to September, and cool winters. The district shares boundaries with Shivpuri, Ashoknagar, Rajgarh and parts of Rajasthan.
The Guna region has historically been part of the Malwa cultural zone and came under successive powers including the Mughals, the Marathas, and later the Scindias of Gwalior. Under the princely state of Gwalior, Guna developed as a military and administrative outpost. After the integration of princely states into the Indian Union, the area became part of Madhya Bharat and subsequently Madhya Pradesh on its formation in 1956. Guna district was carved out as a separate administrative unit, with the city as its headquarters.
The city is administered by the Guna Municipal Council (Nagar Palika), which is responsible for local civic services such as water supply, sanitation, roads, and public health. District-level administration is headed by the District Collector, while law and order is overseen by the Superintendent of Police.
Guna's economy is largely agrarian, with the surrounding district producing soybean, wheat, gram, and oilseeds. The city hosts agricultural mandis, trade in grain and pulses, and small-scale industry. A major industrial presence is the National Fertilizers Limited (NFL) plant established at Vijaypur near Guna, which is one of the larger gas-based urea production facilities in India and a significant employer in the region.
Hindi is the principal language of administration and education, while Malvi and Bundeli dialects are spoken in surrounding rural areas. The population is religiously diverse, with Hindu and Muslim communities forming the major groups, alongside smaller Jain, Sikh and Christian populations.
Guna is the centre of the Guna Lok Sabha constituency, which has historically been associated with the Scindia family of the former Gwalior princely house. The constituency has sent members from the Indian National Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party to Parliament at different times. At the state level, Guna is represented in the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
The city has government and private schools affiliated to the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education and the CBSE, along with degree colleges affiliated to Jiwaji University, Gwalior. Technical and vocational training institutes serve students from across the district.
Guna and its surroundings include several temples, dargahs and historic sites associated with the region's composite Malwa culture. Notable nearby destinations include the historic town of Chanderi (renowned for its handloom sarees and medieval architecture) in the adjoining Ashoknagar district, and Shivpuri with its Madhav National Park.
