The electricity sector in Gujarat was historically managed by the Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB), a vertically integrated utility responsible for generation, transmission and distribution. Following the policy of power sector reforms initiated under the Electricity Act, 2003, the Government of Gujarat unbundled GEB into separate functional entities to bring in financial discipline, accountability and operational specialisation. Transmission functions were carved out into a dedicated entity, GETCO, while generation, distribution and trading were assigned to other successor companies under the umbrella of GUVNL.
As the state transmission utility, GETCO performs a range of statutory and operational functions, including:
GETCO operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of GUVNL, which acts as the holding company for the seven entities created from the erstwhile Gujarat Electricity Board. The other principal entities under GUVNL include Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) for generation, and four geographical distribution companies — Uttar Gujarat Vij Company Limited (UGVCL), Madhya Gujarat Vij Company Limited (MGVCL), Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited (PGVCL) and Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited (DGVCL). GETCO is regulated by the Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC), which determines transmission tariffs and approves capital investment plans.
GETCO operates one of the largest state-level transmission networks in India, supporting Gujarat's status as a major industrial state and as a leading producer of both conventional and renewable electricity. The transmission grid managed by GETCO is critical for evacuating power from large thermal stations along the Gujarat coast as well as from solar and wind energy zones in regions such as Kutch, Banaskantha and Surendranagar. The utility plays an important role in integrating renewable generation with the state and national grid.
