Bhaderwah, often referred to as "Chota Kashmir" for its alpine landscape, is a tehsil headquarters in Doda district. Higher education in the Chenab Valley historically required students to travel to Jammu or Srinagar; the establishment of a government degree college at Bhaderwah extended access to undergraduate education within the valley itself. The college functions under the Department of Higher Education of the Jammu and Kashmir government and follows the academic calendar and curriculum of its affiliating university.
The college conducts undergraduate courses in the faculties of arts, science, and commerce, with examinations conducted by the affiliating university. As with other government colleges in Jammu and Kashmir, it has progressively adopted the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and, more recently, the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 as implemented by the Department of Higher Education.
The college is regarded as a key educational institution for the predominantly hilly and rural population of the Bhaderwah region. It contributes to widening participation in higher education for first-generation learners, women students from remote villages, and candidates preparing for state and central recruitment examinations. The institution also serves as a venue for cultural, literary, and academic events linked to the wider Chenab Valley.
