Mananthavady is one of the three taluk headquarters of Wayanad district, alongside Vythiri and Sulthan Bathery. The town has historically been a centre for trade, administration and education for the surrounding hill tracts. As a government institution in this region, the college plays a role in extending access to higher education to first-generation learners and to students from Scheduled Tribe communities such as the Paniya, Kurichiya, Kuruma and Adiya, who form a significant share of the local population.
The college functions under the Department of Collegiate Education, Government of Kerala, and follows the academic regulations of Kannur University, to whose jurisdiction the colleges of Kasaragod, Kannur and Wayanad districts were transferred after the university was established in 1996. Programmes are typically offered in the streams of arts, science and commerce at the undergraduate level, with selected postgraduate courses, following the Choice Based Credit and Semester System adopted by Kerala universities.
The campus lies within Mananthavady town, which is connected by road to Kozhikode, Kannur and Mysuru, and which sits close to forested areas on the fringe of the Western Ghats. The region's high-elevation climate, biodiversity and tribal heritage often inform field studies and extension activities undertaken by the college.
As one of the government-run arts and science colleges in Wayanad, the institution contributes to widening participation in higher education in a district that has historically lagged the Kerala state average on several educational indicators. It also functions as an examination and academic centre under Kannur University in the northern part of the state.
