Background
The northern districts of Kerala, often referred to collectively as the Malabar region, were historically served by the University of Calicut for higher education affiliation. The need for a dedicated university in the northern belt led to the creation of Kannur University, which was constituted by an Act of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. The university's main campus is situated at Mangattuparamba near Kannur town, with several satellite campuses and study centres distributed across its territorial jurisdiction.
Campuses and Centres
In addition to the main campus at Mangattuparamba, the university operates teaching departments and research centres at locations including Palayad (Thalassery), Payyanur, Nileshwar and Kasaragod. These campuses house specialised schools devoted to disciplines such as life sciences, chemical sciences, management studies, information technology, social sciences, and languages.
Academic Structure
Kannur University functions as both an affiliating and a teaching university. Its activities are organised through:
- University teaching departments offering postgraduate and doctoral programmes.
- Affiliated arts and science colleges spread across northern Kerala.
- Professional colleges in education, engineering, management, and other applied fields.
- Research centres recognised for doctoral work in specialised areas.
Governance
The university is administered through statutory bodies established under its founding Act, including the Chancellor (the Governor of Kerala, by office), the Pro-Chancellor (the State Minister for Higher Education, by office), the Vice-Chancellor as the principal academic and executive officer, the Syndicate, the Senate, and the Academic Council. Faculty boards and boards of studies oversee curriculum design and academic regulation.
Significance
Kannur University plays an important role in widening access to higher education in northern Kerala, a region that historically lagged behind the central and southern parts of the state in terms of dedicated tertiary education infrastructure. By absorbing affiliating responsibilities for colleges in Kannur, Kasaragod and parts of Wayanad, the institution has contributed to academic decentralisation in the state and to research output in fields relevant to the regional economy and culture, including marine and coastal studies, regional history, and the languages and literatures of north Kerala.
