Gautham Vasudev Menon is an Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, producer and occasional actor who works predominantly in Tamil cinema, with notable forays into Telugu and Hindi films. Known for his distinctive urban storytelling style, he is recognised for romantic dramas, neo-noir thrillers and police procedurals. He is the founder of the production house Photon Kathaas (also stylised as Ondraga Entertainment for certain ventures).

Born into a Malayali family, Menon was raised in Tamil Nadu and pursued an engineering degree at the Crescent Engineering College in Chennai before entering the film industry. He worked as an assistant director under filmmaker Rajiv Menon on the Tamil films Minsara Kanavu and Kandukondain Kandukondain in the late 1990s, an experience that shaped his visual sensibility.
Menon made his directorial debut with the romantic drama Minnale (2001), starring R. Madhavan, which became a commercial success and was later remade by him in Hindi as Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001) with the same lead. This dual-language launch established his focus on contemporary urban romance.
Menon developed a recurring strand of police-officer-led thrillers featuring the fictional character Raghavan, played by Kamal Haasan in Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2006) and earlier introduced through Suriya's role in Kaakha Kaakha (2003). Kaakha Kaakha was remade in Telugu as Gharshana (2004) and in Hindi as Force (2011), both produced or scripted under his supervision. Yennai Arindhaal (2015), starring Ajith Kumar, continued this thematic line.
His romantic films include Pachaikili Muthucharam (2007), Vaaranam Aayiram (2008) starring Suriya, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa (2010) starring Silambarasan and Trisha, and its Telugu version Ye Maaya Chesave (2010) featuring Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu. Vaaranam Aayiram won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil.
Subsequent projects include Neethaane En Ponvasantham (2012), Achcham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada (2016), Enai Noki Paayum Thota (2019), and the anthology segment Karthik Dial Seytha Yenn (2020), a sequel short to Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa. He has also directed for streaming platforms, including the web series Queen (2019) on MX Player, based on the life of Jayalalithaa, and Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu (2022) starring Silambarasan.
Menon has acted in supporting and lead roles in films such as Iraivi (2016), Vada Chennai (2018) directed by Vetrimaaran, and Master (2021). Through Photon Kathaas and Ondraga Entertainment he has produced films across Tamil and Telugu, including projects led by other directors.
Menon is associated with a polished, dialogue-driven style emphasising upper-middle-class urban settings, voice-over narration, long-form romance arcs, and stylised cinematography of Chennai and other cities. His collaborations with composer A. R. Rahman, particularly the soundtrack of Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, are widely regarded as influential in contemporary Tamil film music. His police thrillers contributed to a renewed mainstream interest in the procedural genre in Tamil cinema during the 2000s.
