Overview
Silambarasan Rajendar, popularly known as Silambarasan TR or STR, and earlier credited as Simbu, is an Indian actor, playback singer, lyricist, music composer, and film director who works predominantly in Tamil cinema. The son of filmmaker and actor T. Rajendar, he made his debut as a child artist in the 1980s and graduated to lead roles in the early 2000s. Background and early life
Silambarasan was born in Chennai into a film family. His father, T. Rajendar, is a veteran writer-director-actor and music composer whose films served as the early platform for Silambarasan's career. He first appeared on screen as a child, featuring in films directed and produced by his father during the late 1980s and 1990s, which gave him exposure to acting, music, and filmmaking from a young age.
Career
Debut as lead actor
Silambarasan transitioned to lead roles with Kadhal Azhivathillai (2002), directed by his father. The film established him as a young romantic hero and was followed by Dum (2003), a Telugu remake, and Alai (2003).
Rise in the 2000s
He gained wider recognition with Manmadhan (2004), a thriller in which he played the lead and contributed to the soundtrack. Subsequent films included Kovil (2004) and Kalvanin Kadhali (2006). Rahman, and Anbanavan Asaradhavan Adangadhavan (2017).
Resurgence
Silambarasan saw renewed success with Eeswaran (2021) and Maanaadu (2021), the latter a science-fiction political thriller directed by Venkat Prabhu involving a time-loop premise, which received strong critical and box office response. Pathu Thala (2023), a Tamil adaptation of the Kannada film Mufti, and Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu (2022), directed by Gautham Menon, further consolidated his standing.

Silambarasan has composed music for films including Vaalu and contributed songs and lyrics across his filmography.
