Overview

Farhan Akhtar is an Indian filmmaker, actor, screenwriter, producer, playback singer and television presenter who works primarily in Hindi cinema. He made his directorial debut with Dil Chahta Hai (2001), a film widely regarded as a turning point in contemporary Hindi cinema for its portrayal of urban Indian youth. He is the co-founder of Excel Entertainment, a major Mumbai-based film and television production company.

Background

Farhan Akhtar was born into a prominent literary and film family. His paternal grandfather Jan Nisar Akhtar was an Urdu poet, and his great-grandfather Muztar Khairabadi was also a noted poet. His parents, Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani, separated during his childhood, after which his father married actress Shabana Azmi. He studied at Maneckji Cooper School in Mumbai and later at H.R. College of Commerce and Economics. Before turning to direction, he assisted filmmakers including Pankaj Parashar and Lamhe-era veterans, and worked on advertising films.

Career

Direction and screenwriting

Akhtar's debut feature Dil Chahta Hai (2001), starring Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshaye Khanna, won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. He followed it with Lakshya (2004), a coming-of-age war drama set against the Kargil conflict, and a remake of Don (2006) with Shah Rukh Khan, followed by its sequel Don 2 (2011).

Acting

He made his acting debut in Rock On!! (2008), produced by Excel Entertainment and directed by Abhishek Kapoor, in which he played the lead role of musician Aditya Shroff and also performed the songs. The role earned him the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer and a Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. His subsequent acting work includes Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) directed by his sister Zoya Akhtar, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013) where he played athlete Milkha Singh, Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), Lucknow Central (2017), The Sky Is Pink (2019), and Toofaan (2021).

Production

Excel Entertainment, co-founded with Ritesh Sidhwani in 1999, has produced films such as Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya, the Don series, Rock On!!, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Fukrey series, Dil Dhadakne Do, Gully Boy (2019) and Ms. Marvel (2022) for Disney+. The company has also produced web series for streaming platforms, including Mirzapur and Inside Edge.

Music and television

As a playback singer, Akhtar has performed songs in several of his films. He hosted the talk show Oye! It's Friday! on NDTV Imagine and has appeared in concerts featuring music from Rock On!! and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

Activism

Akhtar founded MARD (Men Against Rape and Discrimination) in 2013, a campaign aimed at raising awareness on gender-based violence and discrimination. He has also been associated with UN Women as a Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia.

Personal life

Farhan Akhtar married hairstylist Adhuna Bhabani in 2000; they have two daughters and divorced in 2017. In February 2022, he married actress Shibani Dandekar.

Akhtar is regarded as a key figure in the modernisation of mainstream Hindi cinema. Dil Chahta Hai is frequently cited as a film that redefined the depiction of urban friendship, dialogue and aesthetic in Bollywood.
