The institution traces its origin to Cotton College, founded on 27 May 1901 and named after Sir Henry Stedman Cotton, then Chief Commissioner of Assam, who played a central role in its establishment. For much of the twentieth century the college was affiliated to the University of Calcutta, then to Gauhati University after the latter was founded in 1948. Over the decades, Cotton College became one of the principal centres of liberal and scientific education in Assam, producing generations of scholars, civil servants, writers, and political figures from the region.
Cotton University was created through the Cotton University Act, 2017, passed by the Assam Legislative Assembly. The Act merged Cotton College with the postgraduate Cotton College State University, which had earlier been carved out in 2011, to form a single unitary public university. Following the conversion, the institution began awarding its own degrees and reorganised teaching into university departments.
The university is organised into departments grouped under faculties covering the natural sciences, humanities, languages, social sciences, and commerce. Programmes typically include three- and four-year undergraduate courses, two-year master's programmes, M.Phil. and Ph.D. research, as well as certificate and diploma courses. Admission is conducted through entrance examinations administered by the university.
The main campus is situated at Panbazar in central Guwahati, on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra. The campus retains several heritage buildings dating from the colonial period, alongside more recent academic blocks, hostels, libraries, and laboratories. The university library, built on the long collection history of Cotton College, is among the older academic libraries in the region.
As the successor to Cotton College, the university occupies a distinctive place in the educational and cultural history of Assam. Its alumni include prominent literary figures, scientists, jurists, and political leaders associated with the modern history of the state. The transition to university status was intended to expand research capacity and curricular autonomy while preserving the institution's heritage.
