The Central Sanskrit University (CSU) is a central university located in New Delhi, India, dedicated to the study, teaching, and propagation of the Sanskrit language and Shastraic traditions. Established originally as Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, it functions under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and serves as one of the principal institutions for Sanskrit higher education in the country, operating through a network of campuses spread across several Indian states.

The institution traces its origins to the recommendations of the Sanskrit Commission (1956–57), which urged the establishment of a dedicated body to promote Sanskrit studies in independent India. Acting on these recommendations, the Government of India set up Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan as an autonomous body to coordinate, support, and conduct Sanskrit education at various levels.
For several decades, the Sansthan operated as a deemed-to-be university, running multiple campuses (Adarsha Sanskrit Mahavidyalayas and Shodha Sansthans) across India. It offered traditional Shastri and Acharya programmes alongside modern degree structures, combining Pāṇinian grammar, Nyāya, Vedānta, Sāhitya, Jyotiṣa, and other classical disciplines with contemporary academic methods.
The Central Sanskrit Universities Act, 2020, passed by the Parliament of India, converted three existing deemed universities into full-fledged central universities. Under this Act, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan was reconstituted as Central Sanskrit University, alongside the conversion of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha (New Delhi) into Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University, and Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha (Tirupati) into the National Sanskrit University.
Central Sanskrit University delivers programmes through a multi-campus model, with constituent campuses in different parts of India. These campuses provide instruction at the school, undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels, and conduct research in classical Indian knowledge systems.
The university operates campuses in multiple states, including locations such as Delhi, Jaipur, Bhopal, Lucknow, Garli (Himachal Pradesh), Ekalavya (Agartala, Tripura), Guruvayoor (Kerala), Puri (Odisha), Shringeri (Karnataka), and Devaprayag (Uttarakhand). These campuses preserve regional Sanskrit traditions while offering standardised academic programmes.
