The university offers programmes spanning the traditional Sanskrit curriculum—including Vyakarana (grammar), Sahitya (literature), Vedanta, Nyaya, Mimamsa, Jyotisha, Dharmashastra and Veda—alongside modern academic disciplines connected to Indology, education and language studies. Degrees offered include Shastri (undergraduate), Acharya (postgraduate), M.Phil. and Ph.D., as well as Shiksha Shastri and Shiksha Acharya programmes in teacher education.
History
The institution traces its origin to Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, established at Tirupati in 1961 as an autonomous body under the Government of India to promote Sanskrit learning. In recognition of its academic standing, it was conferred the status of a Deemed-to-be University in 1987 by the University Grants Commission.
With the enactment of the Central Sanskrit Universities Act, 2020, the institution was upgraded to a full-fledged central university and renamed the National Sanskrit University. Two other Sanskrit deemed universities were similarly upgraded under the same legislation: the Central Sanskrit University in New Delhi and the Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University, also in New Delhi.
Campus and location
The campus is situated in Tirupati, a temple town in the Chittoor region of Andhra Pradesh, long associated with traditional Sanskrit and Vaishnava scholarship and home to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams. The location reflects the institution's orientation towards classical learning rooted in the cultural geography of southern India.
Academic structure
The university is organised into faculties and departments covering the principal branches of Sanskrit knowledge systems. Major academic divisions typically include:
- Faculty of Vedas and Agamas
- Faculty of Sahitya, Sanskriti and Darshana
- Faculty of Vyakarana
- Faculty of Education (Shiksha Shastri / Shiksha Acharya)
Significance
As a central university devoted exclusively to Sanskrit, NSU plays a national role in preserving classical Indian knowledge systems, training teachers and researchers, publishing critical editions and supporting manuscript studies. Along with its sister institutions in New Delhi, it forms part of the Government of India's framework for the institutional promotion of Sanskrit at the highest academic level.
