The Berger brand traces its origins to Lewis Berger, a colour chemist who began manufacturing pigments and paints in England in the eighteenth century. The Indian operations developed through successive ownership changes during the twentieth century, eventually being reconstituted as Berger Paints India Limited. The company is currently controlled by the Dhingra family, who have led its expansion in India over recent decades.
Berger Paints manufactures a broad portfolio that spans:
Manufacturing facilities are located across multiple Indian states, supported by a nationwide dealer and distribution network and a tinting-machine programme at retail outlets. The company also operates in markets such as Nepal, Bangladesh, Russia and Poland through subsidiaries and associated companies.
Berger markets its products under a range of sub-brands covering different price points and applications, including premium and economy emulsions, weatherproof exterior paints, enamels and specialised finishes. The company has also introduced services such as colour consultancy and painting application services, in addition to retail-facing tools for shade selection.
Berger Paints is consistently counted among the top paint manufacturers in the Indian decorative coatings market, alongside companies such as Asian Paints, Kansai Nerolac and Akzo Nobel India. Its long industrial history, wide product range and extensive distribution make it a significant player in the Indian construction, real estate and industrial supply chain. The company is also recognised for its long-running advertising campaigns and brand presence in Indian consumer media.
