Background

The Delhi–Meerut RRTS is a semi-high-speed regional rail corridor connecting Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi with Modipuram in Meerut. The project is implemented by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), a joint venture of the Government of India and the state governments of Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Within Meerut city, the alignment also functions as a local mass transit system, with additional stations such as Begumpul serving intra-city commuters in addition to the regional RRTS stops.

Location and connectivity

Begumpul is one of the central commercial localities of Meerut, situated along the city's principal road corridor. The station is positioned to serve markets, offices and residential neighbourhoods in the central part of the city, and provides interchange opportunities with city bus services and intermediate public transport.

Significance

As a Meerut Metro station integrated into the RRTS corridor, Begumpul contributes to the first project in India where a regional rapid transit system and a city metro share the same infrastructure and rolling stock standards. This integrated model is intended to reduce travel times within Meerut and improve connectivity to Ghaziabad and Delhi.
