Bally Ghat is located in the Bally area along the western bank of the Hooghly River, an industrial and residential suburb that lies immediately to the north of Howrah city and forms part of the greater Kolkata metropolitan region. The station functions primarily as a commuter halt, serving local residents and passengers travelling between Howrah and the suburbs further north along the Hooghly.
The station is named after the Bally Ghat on the Hooghly, a riverside landing point historically used for ferry crossings between the western bank and Dakshineswar on the eastern bank. The area around the station is closely connected to the Vivekananda Setu (Bally Bridge) and the Nivedita Setu, two major road and rail bridges across the Hooghly that link Howrah district to North 24 Parganas.
As a suburban halt within the Kolkata commuter rail network, Bally Ghat contributes to easing road congestion in one of India's most densely populated urban regions. The station is part of a wider network of small halts that supplement the larger junction at Bally, providing access to localities close to the riverbank.
