Bagdogra lies on the plains of North Bengal, close to the Mahananda river system and at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. The station is situated in a region that forms a major transport hub for North Bengal, the Dooars, Sikkim and parts of the North-East. The town is well connected by National Highway and is in the immediate vicinity of Bagdogra Airport, while the larger railway hubs of New Jalpaiguri Junction and Siliguri Junction handle most long-distance passenger traffic for the area.
The station is operated by Indian Railways and falls within the jurisdiction of the Northeast Frontier Railway zone, which administers most of the rail network in North Bengal and the North-Eastern states. Day-to-day operational control is exercised through the divisional setup that oversees stations in the Siliguri area.
Although Bagdogra is a comparatively minor halt in terms of long-distance services, it derives importance from its location. The settlement is a known stop on the route between the densely populated Siliguri belt and the tea-growing tracts further west. Passengers travelling onward to Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Sikkim or the Dooars frequently use Bagdogra as part of a multi-modal journey that combines rail, road and air links.
