The institution traces its origins to Atmiya Group of Institutions in Rajkot, which previously offered programmes affiliated with state universities such as Saurashtra University and Gujarat Technological University. With the grant of private university status by the Government of Gujarat, the constituent colleges were brought together under the umbrella of Atmiya University, allowing the institution to design its own academic programmes and award its own degrees.
The university is organised into faculties and schools covering engineering and technology, sciences, computer applications, commerce and management, languages, and social sciences. Programmes are offered at the diploma, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. The campus houses laboratories, a central library, sports facilities, and student residences.
The campus is situated on the Kalawad Road area of Rajkot in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat. The setting integrates academic blocks with hostels, dining facilities, and recreational spaces, and the university emphasises a residential model of education for many of its programmes.
Atmiya University is one of several private universities established in Gujarat to expand higher education capacity in the state. Located in Rajkot, the largest city in the Saurashtra region, it contributes to regional access to professional and research-oriented education in engineering, sciences, and management.
